Organic Cotton – the importance and benefits

Certified organic cotton means you and your family are safe from the toxic dyes and insecticides used in conventional cotton production. Our bodies are constantly fighting the toxins found in the products around us. With organic cotton sheets and towels, you help create environments in your home that allow the body’s defence systems a chance to recuperate. Just like organic food, organic cotton is good for you and your family, as well as the environment.

Organic towels are safe enough for many with acute allergies and chemical sensitivities. No formaldehyde or arsenic is used in the smoothing or growing and farmers are able to use the water table for their herds without fear of harm when growing organic cotton crops.

If you already support organics for the health of our environment, then buying organic cotton sheets is another great way to make a difference. It takes about 500grams of pesticides and synthetic fertilisers to grow the cotton needed to make just one sheet. ecoLinen Organic cotton is grown on Indian farms and there are no pesticides or herbicides used and since India has monsoonal rain, growing cotton crops doesn’t tax the land or town water supplies.

Traces of chemicals used to eliminate weeds and unwanted insects in cotton crops can remain in fabrics, even after washing. Our skin is absorbing and releasing chemicals from our environment all day every day. Some chemicals are stored and collected in our bodies, this is called bioaccumulation. Bioaccumulation of chemicals can weaken your immune system. Some affects show in our nervous system, respiratory system, headaches, dizziness and irritations to the eyes, nose and throat along with difficulties with sleep, concentration and memory. To maintain your wellbeing and not place further stress on your body, it is recommended that you sleep in bed linen free of toxic dyes or cotton sprayed with harsh chemicals.

"All natural cotton" isn't necessarily chemical-free. The conventional processing of cotton textiles relies heavily on chemicals, many of which are acutely toxic and classified by authorities as hazardous. Certification for the growing of the ecoLinen cotton, through to the weaving and the processes applied afterwards, is by Control Union in the Netherlands – the largest international textile certifier.

The dyes chosen are approved by both Control Union and Okeo-tex in Germany, so it is known that no harsh chemicals are used in the making of the products. The use of low-impact certified organic dyes and even the whitening is non-harsh hydrogen peroxide rather than chlorine bleach. This organic cotton, is therefore stronger, more durable fabric and the construction of the sheeting allows the use of leading edge manufacturing processes to create luxury designs. When cared for properly organic cotton linens last longer than conventional products.

The designs are simple and classic and fulfil the levels of luxury set by international eco-resorts. ecoLinen production in both India and Australia is always sweatshop-free and the environments certified by fair trade.
